Our Gospel imperative is to love our neighbors as ourselves, and we joyfully respond to this call through outreach to both our closest neighbors and those around the world.
St. John's strives in faith to be the hands and feet of Christ in our local community and the world. (For information about St. John's commitment to the Millennium Development Goals, please go to our MDG page on this site. St. John's responds to the MDGs through many efforts, including the Kimoyo project in cooperation with our partner congregation, Kingdom Life Ministries.)
Community Living Club This long-standing St. John’s ministry provides friendship, support and the ministry of presence for local mentally ill adults. This group meets twice monthly on Thursdays at 5:00 p.m. in the St. John’s Parish Hall and needs volunteers to help serve and prepare meals, to assist with activities and to simply engage in conversation with this group of intelligent adults who suffer from mental illness. Special events are held throughout the year for holidays: Halloween Party, Thanksgiving Dinner, and participants’ birthday parties. Come be blessed by this ministry! Coordinator: Nancy Page (nbpage@aol.com) CYP is a not-for-profit organization that was started by the Outreach Committee of St. John's Episcopal Church in Roanoke ten years ago. Its mission, "to encourage learning and the development of a positive self-image, and to provide a network of support for middle school children and their families," is fulfilled every school day as students work and play with supportive adult leaders in a safe and enriching after-school environment. Over the years, hundreds of young people have received the benefits of tutor-assisted howework support, character-shaping life skills groups and service learning projects, and enriching arts and science activities and cultural diversity awareness education that reinforce classroom learning through hands-on experiences. Programming is based upon the Search Institutes's 40 Developmental Assets, which "are concrete, common sense, positive experiences and qualities essential to raising successful young people." Director: Matt Milovich (cyp@stjohnsroanoke.org) Tuesday Morning Emergency Outreach So many lives have been touched by the care and support of our Tuesday morning Emergency Outreach program. This program helps people in need of urgent financial assistance regarding rent or utilities. Referrals are also given for additional financial aid or food assistance from other agencies. Caring volunteers are needed. Chairs: Bob Field and Mae Moore Interfaith Hospitality Group This is the perfect outreach endeavor for those short on time — yet is richly rewarding as it serves homeless families at our onsite center twice each year. Twice annually we house families in The Lighthouse for one week, providing housing, food, worship, and fellowship. Other city–wide churches participate for the remainder of weeks. Volunteers are always welcome for this wonderful opportunity to work within the greater faith community. Say yes to this opportunity to serve the marginalized in our society! Coordinator: Gates DeHart Kimoyo What began as a partnership between St. John’s and Kingdom Life Ministries has grown Summer Enrichment Program Want to give back to the world, but short on time? Spend just one week in July volunteering to help underprivileged children enjoy a week of enrichment camp. You might offer to cook, drive, teach or chaperone these great children for a week of summer fun. Other churches supplement the remainder of the summer months. Coordinator: Alison Blanton Community Youth Program
